Bongaon Encounter: Prime Suspect in Rape-Murder Shot Dead
In a dramatic turn of events, the main suspect in a high-profile rape and murder case was killed in a police encounter early Tuesday morning.
Prahlad Das, 23, was shot dead during an encounter in Bongaon, West Bengal.
The incident follows the discovery of a 17-year-old victim's body just days prior.
Local protests erupted over safety concerns, prompting a strong police response.
In the early hours of October 27, 2026, Prahlad Das, the 23-year-old prime suspect in the rape and murder of a Class 11 student, was killed in a police encounter in Bongaon, West Bengal. The police had taken Das to the crime scene in Gaighata for reconstruction when he allegedly seized a firearm from an officer and opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate in self-defense.
This incident marks the second encounter of its kind in West Bengal within four months, raising questions about law enforcement practices in the state. Das had been arrested shortly after the discovery of the victim's body on October 25, 2026, and was in police custody at the time of the encounter. A Special Investigation Team was established to probe the case, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations against him.
Following the encounter, tensions escalated in the area as local residents began protesting against the heinous crime. The protests were fueled by fears for women's safety, prompting a significant police presence to maintain order. The Mamata-Trinamool Congress party criticized the government, questioning their commitment to ensuring safety for women and girls in the state.
In response to the unrest, State Minister Agnimitra Paul emphasized the government's dedication to addressing women's safety issues, asserting that those involved in the crime would face severe consequences. "Our government will not spare anyone involved in this crime," she stated, contrasting her administration's approach with that of previous governments.
The recent encounter follows a similar incident on July 8, 2026, in the Baruipur area, where another prime suspect was killed during a police operation. Both cases have drawn significant media attention and public scrutiny, reflecting ongoing concerns about violence against women in West Bengal. As investigations continue, the state government faces mounting pressure to ensure justice and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
