The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a press conference held on Saturday. Sambit Patra, the BJP's national spokesperson, suggested that the Congress should retain Gandhi as a 'mock prime minister for life' while addressing the ongoing 'public impeachment' of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar by the INDIA bloc. Patra asserted that the global perception of Gandhi is that he lacks the capability to lead, claiming, 'This satellite will never launch.' He further criticized the opposition's actions as a mockery of parliamentary processes.
Patra's remarks came in the context of the Congress-led INDIA bloc's resolution to impeach CEC Kumar, which they accuse of being part of a conspiracy to manipulate elections. He defended the legal protections afforded to the CEC, emphasizing that the BJP did not create any new laws regarding this immunity, as such provisions are already established in the Constitution. He cited a recent court ruling that dismissed an order for an FIR against Kumar, highlighting the need for proper legal procedures to protect constitutional authorities from politically motivated attacks.
In addition to Patra, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad condemned Gandhi's actions, claiming they undermine the integrity of the nation. He challenged Gandhi to resign, arguing that the Congress leader's behavior is a disservice to the public. Prasad also referenced historical instances of electoral misconduct, alleging that the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, engaged in vote theft to secure his position.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also weighed in, criticizing both Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav for raising concerns about voter irregularities. During a rally in Lucknow, Shah highlighted the BJP's electoral successes across various states, suggesting that the opposition's complaints stem from their failure to win elections. He invited them to address their grievances in Parliament, asserting that the BJP is ready for an open discussion on these issues.
The INDIA bloc's push for Kumar's impeachment is rooted in accusations that he has been complicit in a broader scheme to undermine electoral integrity. The resolution read by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge outlines charges against Kumar, including participating in a conspiracy to influence election outcomes. The opposition's actions reflect ongoing tensions between the ruling party and its critics, with significant implications for the political landscape as the nation approaches upcoming elections.
