On Saturday, Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit officially took command as the 29th Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force (IAF), following the retirement of Air Chief Marshal AP Singh after 42 years of dedicated service. Dixit, previously the Vice Chief of Air Staff, has a rich background in military aviation, having been commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF in December 1986.

Dixit’s career spans over four decades, during which he has gained significant experience in various roles, including operations, flight testing, and capability development. His notable contributions include participation in critical operations such as Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict and Operation Sindoor, which involved a military confrontation with Pakistan. His previous positions include Chief of Integrated Defence Staff and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command.

The IAF highlighted Dixit's instrumental role in modernizing the force, particularly in finalizing upgrade projects for the Jaguar and MiG-27 aircraft, as well as overseeing the operational clearance activities for the LCA Mk-1. As he steps into this leadership role, the IAF faces challenges, notably a shortage of fighter jets and the need to expedite several key modernization programs.

Dixit’s immediate focus will be on the LCA Mk-1A, which is nearing induction after facing delays. This aircraft is set to replace the aging MiG-21 fleet, which was retired last year. The IAF has placed significant orders with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for 180 Mk-1A jets, with the first deliveries expected soon. Additionally, the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, which involves acquiring 114 Rafale jets, is also a priority, with plans for local production in India.

Looking ahead, Dixit’s leadership will be crucial as the IAF aims to enhance its combat capabilities and address existing gaps in its fleet. The modernization efforts are part of a broader strategy to prepare the armed forces for future conflicts, especially as the government pushes for theaterization reforms. The coming months will be pivotal as Dixit implements these initiatives and navigates the complexities of military procurement and operational readiness.
