Anurag Sujania Resigns as IPS Officer Days After Transfer Amid Hooch Probe
IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns just four days after being reassigned from Sagar amid ongoing investigations into a hooch tragedy.
Anurag Sujania resigned on November 2, 2023, after a recent transfer.
His transfer followed a hooch tragedy in Sagar, resulting in multiple fatalities.
Sujania had been overseeing the investigation into the incident prior to his reassignment.
In a surprising turn of events, IPS officer Anurag Sujania has resigned from his position with the Madhya Pradesh government, just four days after being transferred from his role as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sagar. Sujania's resignation was submitted on November 2, 2023, and he cited 'personal reasons' for his decision.
The transfer, which took place on October 27, 2023, was part of a broader reshuffle involving several district collectors and SPs in Sagar and Dewas. Sujania was moved to the Police Headquarters in Bhopal as an Assistant Inspector General (AIG). However, sources within the police department indicated that the abrupt nature of the transfer was not well received by Sujania, particularly as he was actively overseeing the investigation into the recent hooch tragedy in Sagar at the time.
The hooch tragedy, which has drawn significant attention, resulted in at least 16 confirmed deaths due to the consumption of toxic, illegally produced liquor. Unofficial reports suggest that the death toll could be as high as 36. This incident has raised serious concerns regarding the illegal liquor trade and the effectiveness of law enforcement in the region. In response to the tragedy, the Madhya Pradesh government also transferred the district collector alongside Sujania.
Sujania, a 2014-batch IPS officer from Rajasthan, has held various positions throughout his career, including SP roles in districts such as Tikamgarh, Mandsaur, and Morena. He holds an MTech degree and was confirmed in service in December 2017. His recent resignation has sparked discussions about the implications for ongoing investigations and the accountability of officials in the wake of the hooch tragedy.
Looking ahead, the state government will need to address the fallout from this incident, including the ongoing investigation into the hooch tragedy and the management of the police department. The appointment of a new SP for Sagar, Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, will also be crucial in ensuring that the investigation continues effectively and that public confidence in law enforcement is restored.
