A significant earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Panama on Friday morning, triggering tsunami alerts across several countries. The US Tsunami Warning System issued warnings for nine nations, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico, following the seismic event that occurred near the southern tip of Panama.
The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers southwest of the small community of Pitaloza Arriba, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Initially reported as an 8.0 magnitude quake, it was later revised to 7.6. Tremors were felt in various parts of Panama, including the capital, Panama City, and even in neighboring Colombia, where residents reported shaking buildings.
In response to the earthquake, the US tsunami warning system indicated potential hazardous waves affecting the Pacific coast of Central America. The alert included warnings for Hawaii as well. Authorities advised coastal residents to remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions, although no immediate evacuation orders were issued.
Despite the earthquake's intensity, there have been no reports of significant damage in Panama. The Panama Canal Authority confirmed that operations continued normally. Local officials noted minor damages in central provinces, with Omar Smith from the National Civil Protection Service urging calm among residents as aftershocks continued to rattle the region.
As the situation develops, authorities are monitoring the potential for aftershocks and further seismic activity. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and maintain safety protocols until the threat subsides.
