In a significant security breach, 17 remand prisoners escaped from the Thekkampatti sub-jail located near Andipatti in Theni district late on the night of October 26, 2026. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. when the inmates attacked the warders, enabling their escape. This alarming event has triggered an immediate response from local law enforcement, who have heightened security measures across the area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the escape was orchestrated when some inmates deceived the warder on duty by claiming that one of them was suffering from seizures. Trusting their plea, the staff entered the cell, only to be assaulted by the other inmates who had planned the escape. Following the incident, police forces were deployed to secure the area and prevent further escapes.
Inspector General of Police for the South zone, Vijayendra Bidari, arrived at the scene to oversee the situation and coordinate the response. He confirmed that within hours, one escapee, identified as Praveen Kumar, was recaptured, along with three others, bringing the total arrests to four. The police have established 17 special teams dedicated to combing the region for the remaining escapees.
The escapees are reported to have connections to various districts, including Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, and Villupuram, and were serving sentences for different criminal offenses. Authorities have urged the public to assist in the search by providing any information regarding the escapees, with contact numbers made available for tips.
As the investigation continues, police are intensifying their efforts to locate the remaining fugitives. The incident raises serious concerns about the security protocols in place at the sub-jail and the measures needed to prevent such occurrences in the future.
