Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is set to visit drought-affected regions in Maharashtra's Solapur and Dharashiv districts over the next two days. His visit aims to evaluate the situation on the ground and ensure that farmers and local communities receive the necessary assistance amid the ongoing crisis.
During a press briefing in Baramati, Pawar highlighted the immediate challenges faced by the affected areas, particularly concerning drinking water and fodder supplies. He outlined his itinerary, which includes a visit to Pandharpur taluka on Sunday, followed by stops in Solapur and Bhum-Paranda in Dharashiv district on Monday. Local MLAs will accompany him to provide insights into the current conditions.
Pawar pointed out the severity of the water shortage, noting that 135 tankers are currently delivering water to 139 villages in Solapur district. He specifically mentioned that the Madha constituency alone requires 110 tankers to meet its needs. During his visit, he plans to engage with residents of the affected villages to better understand their requirements and expressed optimism that the state government would extend necessary support.
In his remarks, Pawar called for political parties to set aside their differences and collaborate on drought relief efforts. He has already held discussions with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union ministers regarding financial assistance for farmers impacted by the drought. Additionally, he intends to visit the Ujani dam area on Monday to address farmers' concerns related to an artificial intelligence project and assess if any corrective actions are needed.
On the topic of water management in Pune, Pawar stressed the importance of conserving water supplies from local dams, including Khadakwasla and Varasgaon, to meet demand until June of the following year. He also announced that his family would forgo traditional Diwali celebrations this year, focusing instead on efforts to mitigate the drought's impact.
