Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Tuesday that Pune's metro network has expanded to 120 kilometers, with significant portions either completed or under construction. This announcement was made during the inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3, which is expected to position Pune as a model city in urban mobility.
During the event, Fadnavis emphasized the environmentally friendly aspects of the new metro line, stating that it will independently generate 30% of its energy needs. The inauguration was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched metro projects worth approximately ₹21,800 crore through video conferencing. Fadnavis expressed his satisfaction with the green initiatives of the metro, highlighting its potential to set new benchmarks in urban transportation.
Fadnavis pointed out that the metro expansion is particularly crucial for the Hinjewadi area, known as the IT capital of India. He noted the daily traffic struggles faced by commuters, with many spending up to two hours in congestion. The completion of Metro Line 3 is seen as a significant relief for the thousands of IT professionals who commute to this region daily, marking a long-awaited improvement in their travel experience.
The Pune Metro Line 3, also referred to as the Pink Line, was inaugurated at a cost exceeding ₹8,300 crore. Spanning approximately 23 kilometers, it connects Maan to the District Court Metro station, facilitating better access between the Hinjewadi IT hub and Shivajinagar, one of Pune's key employment centers. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for Phase-II of the Pune Metro, which is projected to cost around ₹13,500 crore, further expanding the metro network across critical areas.
Looking ahead, the Phase-II expansion will include Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A, enhancing connectivity across residential, commercial, and IT sectors in Pune. This ambitious project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility in the city, aligning with the government's vision for sustainable urban development.
