On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ongoing drought crisis in Maharashtra, assuring farmers of comprehensive support from the Union government. During a virtual event, he emphasized the government's commitment to assist farmers and called on citizens to rally behind them, especially during the festive season.
Modi highlighted that the Maharashtra state government has already initiated advance payments of ₹5,000 to eligible farmers in drought-affected regions. This financial aid is part of immediate relief efforts while assessments for crop losses are underway. He reassured farmers that the PM-Kisan funds have also been deposited to provide further assistance, stating, "You do not worry. We are all with the farmers."
The PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme offers eligible farmer families an annual financial support of ₹6,000, disbursed in three installments through direct benefit transfers. Modi reiterated the Union government's financial backing as crucial for helping farmers navigate these challenging times, ensuring they have the necessary resources to sustain their livelihoods.
In addition to addressing the agricultural crisis, Modi inaugurated the Pune Metro Line 3, a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving urban connectivity. This 23.2-km elevated metro line connects the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar and is set to begin passenger services on November 4. The project, constructed at a cost of ₹8,313 crore, is notable for being the first metro initiative in India to be executed under a public-private partnership model, aligning with the National Metro Rail Policy of 2017.
The Pune Metro expansion includes plans for Phase II, which will introduce four new corridors at an estimated cost of ₹13,500 crore. This expansion aims to enhance public transport options across the city, linking key residential and commercial areas. Additionally, the metro project is designed to be environmentally friendly, with a significant portion of its energy needs projected to be met through solar power, and it will be operated by women train operators, promoting gender inclusivity in the workforce.
