On Saturday morning, a parcel exploded outside a courier office in Latur, Maharashtra, injuring two workers. The incident occurred around 10 AM as workers were unloading packages from a courier van parked on Vilasrao Deshmukh Marg, causing panic in the vicinity. Emergency services, including police and forensic experts, quickly arrived to assess the situation and initiate an investigation.
The Latur Superintendent of Police, Amol Tambe, confirmed that the explosion took place within a parcel box. The police seized the damaged box and its contents, which are now undergoing forensic analysis. One worker sustained minor injuries while the other, who was directly handling the parcels, suffered more serious injuries and both were transported to the civil hospital for treatment.
Initial investigations revealed that the parcel had been dispatched from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to a local shop named Banduk Ghar, known for selling airgun pistols. The package reportedly contained an airgun pistol and CO2 cartridges. It had been in Latur for two days prior to the explosion, during which the vehicle was exposed to direct sunlight, potentially raising the temperature of the gas inside the cartridges and leading to the explosion. However, the exact number of airguns and cartridges remains unconfirmed pending forensic results.
The police are not only focusing on the explosion but also on the legal implications of the shipment. They have initiated an investigation under the Explosives Act to determine if the parcel's contents were legally transported and if the involved parties had the necessary permissions. Investigators are reviewing courier service records to trace the sender and intended recipient of the parcel, as well as the specifics of its contents.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are keen to clarify whether courier services can legally handle items like airguns that may pose safety risks. The findings from the forensic laboratory will play a crucial role in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring accountability for the shipment.
