Maharashtra Allocates ₹2.94 Crore for Fort Security Enhancements
The Maharashtra government has approved significant funding for security measures at four historic forts.
₹2.94 crore allocated for security at Pratapgad, Rajgad, Salher, and Khanderi forts.
Deployment includes 80 personnel to safeguard these UNESCO-listed sites.
Expansion of conservation funding now covers unprotected historical monuments.
On October 30, 2026, the Maharashtra government sanctioned ₹2,93,86,720 for a comprehensive security plan aimed at enhancing safety at four prominent forts: Pratapgad, Rajgad, Salher, and Khanderi. These forts are part of the UNESCO-recognized Maratha Military Landscapes of India, highlighting their historical significance and cultural heritage.
The security initiative will be executed by the Maharashtra State Security Board, which plans to deploy a total of 80 contract personnel across the four locations. Each fort will have 19 guards and one security supervisor, tasked with protecting these historic structures and preventing any potential incidents. This move underscores the government's commitment to preserving the integrity of these sites, which are vital to Maharashtra's heritage.
In addition to the security measures, the Maharashtra government has broadened the scope of its conservation funding. The three percent allocation under the District Annual Plan (General) will now also support the preservation of unprotected monuments of historical and archaeological significance. This expansion reflects a growing recognition of the need to safeguard lesser-known sites that contribute to the region's rich history.
The Maratha Military Landscapes encompass a diverse geographical range, including the Sahyadri Range, Deccan Plateau, Konkan Coast, and Eastern Ghats. The military strategies associated with these forts, developed under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later during the Peshwa era, played a crucial role in the region's defense and governance.
Looking ahead, the government has instructed the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums to prepare a report within six months detailing options for establishing permanent security measures at these forts. This initiative not only aims to enhance security but also to ensure that these historical landmarks are preserved for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
