The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its monthly outlook for November, indicating that Maharashtra is likely to experience above-normal daytime temperatures throughout the month. While daytime highs are expected to rise, the minimum temperatures in certain regions, particularly in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, may remain close to or below normal. This forecast suggests a contrast between the warmer days and cooler nights in these areas.

Historically, November is known to be a relatively dry month for Maharashtra, and the IMD has noted that the overall rainfall quantum is anticipated to be low. Despite some regions potentially receiving normal to above-normal rainfall, officials caution that this does not imply significant precipitation. Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the IMD director-general, emphasized that while some areas fall under the normal to above-normal rainfall category, the actual amounts may not be substantial.

The IMD's analysis indicates that maximum temperatures across most of Maharashtra will likely exceed normal levels. In contrast, the forecast for minimum temperatures presents a varied picture, with some regions experiencing warmer nights. SD Sanap, a scientist at IMD Pune, stated that while daytime temperatures are expected to rise, nighttime temperatures in certain areas may not follow this trend.

The implications of this forecast extend beyond Maharashtra, as the IMD anticipates normal to above-normal rainfall activity in several states, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. However, Mohapatra cautioned against over-optimism, noting that year-to-year variations in rainfall can lead to unpredictable outcomes. The El Niño phenomenon is also cited as a contributing factor to the expected temperature increases this November.

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts that the effects of El Niño will peak in November before gradually diminishing, but its influence may linger until March of the following year. This forecast follows an exceptionally warm October, which recorded the highest average maximum temperatures for the month since 1901. As the region prepares for November, residents should remain aware of the potential for warmer days and the uncertain rainfall patterns that may accompany them.
