Ani Ikechukwu Darlington arrested for drug trafficking
211 grams of mephedrone seized during operation
Over 2,300 NDPS cases reported in Navi Mumbai in five years
In a significant drug bust, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Navi Mumbai's crime branch arrested a 41-year-old Nigerian man, Ani Ikechukwu Darlington, for allegedly peddling narcotics. The operation took place on Thursday evening near a hotel on the Panvel-Mumbra highway, where authorities seized mephedrone and cocaine worth a staggering ₹3.5 crore from his possession.
Darlington, a resident of Ambika building in Rohinjan village, Taloja, was caught after the crime branch, led by senior inspector Sandeep Nigade, acted on a tip-off. At the time of his arrest, he was found with 211 grams of mephedrone, valued at ₹6.6 lakh. Following his apprehension, a search of his residence revealed additional contraband, contributing to the total seizure amount.
This is not Darlington's first encounter with the law; he was previously arrested in 2019 for similar offenses and spent seven years in prison before being released on bail last year. The ongoing issue of drug trafficking in the region is highlighted by the staggering number of narcotics-related cases, with 2,387 NDPS cases registered in the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate over the past five years, leading to the arrest of around 3,200 individuals and the confiscation of over 1,078 kg of drugs worth approximately ₹150 crore.
The implications of this arrest extend beyond the individual case, as it underscores the persistent drug problem in Navi Mumbai and the efforts of law enforcement to combat it. The ANC's proactive measures aim to disrupt drug trafficking networks that threaten community safety and health.
Looking ahead, authorities are expected to continue their crackdown on drug-related activities, with further investigations into Darlington's connections and potential accomplices. The police are also likely to enhance their surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
