The latest data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) reveals a notable contraction in the mutual fund industry's assets under management (AUM), which decreased by ₹1.13 lakh crore, or 1.34%, between March and June 2026. The total AUM dropped from ₹84.18 lakh crore in March to ₹83.06 lakh crore by the end of June, indicating a significant shift in the market dynamics.

This decline was not evenly distributed across the country, as 20 states and Union Territories reported a decrease in their AUM, while 18 others experienced growth. The most pronounced losses were seen in New Delhi and Maharashtra, which together contributed ₹1.14 lakh crore to the overall decline, accounting for approximately 80% of the total reduction of ₹1.42 lakh crore across all regions. New Delhi's AUM fell by ₹73,256 crore (8.60%), while Maharashtra saw a decrease of ₹40,455 crore (1.21%).

In contrast, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana emerged as leaders in AUM growth, with Uttar Pradesh adding ₹5,933 crore (1.67%) to reach ₹3.62 lakh crore, and Haryana increasing its AUM by ₹5,702 crore (2.63%) to ₹2.22 lakh crore. Other states such as Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh also reported gains, although on a smaller scale. The 'Others' category, which includes various investor segments, saw an increase of ₹8,818 crore, bringing its total AUM to ₹4.26 lakh crore.

Beyond the major declines in Delhi and Maharashtra, other states like West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Jharkhand contributed significantly to the overall downturn. West Bengal's AUM decreased by ₹5,505 crore (1.36%), while Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand reported declines of ₹4,991 crore (4.46%) and ₹4,302 crore (4.79%), respectively. Together, these five regions accounted for over 90% of the total decline in AUM.

Looking ahead, the mutual fund industry faces a challenging landscape as it grapples with these declines. The data serves as a crucial indicator for mutual fund distributors to identify resilient markets and those requiring further scrutiny. As investor preferences evolve, the industry may need to adapt to maintain growth and relevance in a changing financial environment.
