In a bid to support drought-affected farmers, Maharashtra's Chief Minister announces financial aid ahead of Diwali.
Maharashtra government will provide ₹5,000 to drought-hit farmers before Diwali.
Over 85% of the state's talukas are affected by drought, with 305 out of 358 regions declared impacted.
The assistance aims to alleviate financial strain on farmers during the festive season.
Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has declared that the state will extend financial support of ₹5,000 to farmers impacted by drought, with the funds expected to reach them before the Diwali festival. This announcement was made on October 14, highlighting the urgent need for assistance as the state grapples with severe drought conditions.
The drought situation in Maharashtra has escalated, with more than 85% of the talukas now classified as drought-hit. Recent assessments have added 40 more regions to the affected list, bringing the total to 305 out of 358 sub-divisions. This widespread drought has raised concerns about the agricultural sector's viability and the livelihood of farmers across the state.
Fadnavis noted that the financial aid will be directly transferred to an authenticated list of farmers, which has recently expanded to include an additional 3.5 lakh individuals. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the financial burdens faced by farmers, especially in light of scheduled debt relief payments. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of timely assistance, stating that while drought declarations typically occur by the end of November, the government is prioritizing immediate support due to the current crisis.
The implications of this financial aid are significant for the farming community in Maharashtra, particularly as the festive season approaches. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar acknowledged the severity of the drought and the ongoing water crisis, indicating that the government is actively working on measures to mitigate the impact on farmers. The assistance is expected to provide some relief during a challenging time, allowing farmers to manage their expenses during Diwali.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government plans to continue monitoring the drought situation and will adjust its support measures based on recommendations from a Central government team assessing the affected areas. The timely distribution of the Diwali bonus is crucial for farmers, as it aims to ease their financial strain and help them celebrate the festival despite the ongoing challenges.
