Maharashtra Health Department Enhances Mental Health Services Post Report
In response to a critical report, Maharashtra's health officials are ramping up mental health services across districts.
The health department has mandated improvements in the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP).
Patients previously faced long travels due to a lack of psychiatric beds in district hospitals.
The initiative aims to provide comprehensive mental health services at local healthcare facilities.
The Maharashtra health department has issued directives to all districts to enhance the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) following a report highlighting significant gaps in mental health services. The report, published on September 6, 2026, detailed the lack of psychiatric beds in state-run district hospitals, forcing patients to travel extensive distances for treatment.
The DMHP, operational since 1996 under the National Mental Health Programme, aims to decentralize mental healthcare, making it more accessible to communities. The recent directives, issued on September 23, emphasize the need for comprehensive mental health services, including outpatient and inpatient care, counseling, and targeted interventions. This initiative is crucial as many patients with severe mental health conditions have been relying on the four regional mental hospitals in Pune, Thane, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri, leading to increased pressure on these facilities.
Officials noted that the lack of functional inpatient units at district hospitals has exacerbated the situation, compelling families to undertake long and costly journeys for necessary care. The health department's new orders require that all districts ensure the availability of mental health services, including the promotion of the 24x7 Tele-MANAS helpline for immediate support. The helpline is part of a broader strategy to improve mental health awareness and intervention in various community settings, such as schools and old-age homes.
Dr. Shrinivas Kolod, the Additional Director of Mental Health, emphasized the importance of dedicated mental health staff, such as psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, to be utilized effectively within district healthcare systems. He stated that districts are now tasked with conducting screenings, diagnoses, and follow-ups for individuals with mental health issues, particularly those suffering from severe conditions who may have been neglected.
Looking ahead, the health department has requested monthly reviews of DMHP activities from district authorities to identify and address any administrative challenges. The initiative aims to significantly improve mental health care accessibility across Maharashtra, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective treatment closer to home.
