Maharashtra Extends Claims Deadline for Electoral Roll to Nov 13
The Election Commission of India has extended the deadline for claims and objections regarding Maharashtra's electoral roll by 18 days.
Deadline for claims and objections now Nov 13
Disposal deadline pushed to Nov 25
Opposition cites rural distress as a reason for extension
In a significant move, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced an extension for filing claims and objections related to Maharashtra's draft electoral roll. The new deadline is set for November 13, an increase of 18 days from the previous cutoff of October 26. This decision comes after a request from S Chockalingam, the chief electoral officer of Maharashtra, highlighting the need for more time due to various challenges faced by voters.
The extension is particularly relevant as opposition parties had urged the state government to advocate for more time, citing issues such as drought-related distress and migration that could hinder rural voters from submitting their applications and necessary documents within the original timeframe. An opposition leader pointed out that the initial period was insufficient for new voters or those whose names had been removed from the list to complete their forms.
According to an election official, the ECI had already granted extensions at various stages of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The official noted that Form 6, which is used for voter registration, is simpler to fill out after the SIR process. Many potential voters appear to be waiting for the SIR to conclude before submitting their applications using this easier form. However, data indicates that only around 1.9 million forms had been submitted by October 26, raising concerns that many voters may lack the necessary documents to meet the deadline.
The draft electoral roll was initially published on August 31, following the SIR exercise, with October 1, 2026, designated as the qualifying date for voters. The claims and objections period was originally set to conclude on October 12 but was first extended to October 26 before the latest announcement. Additionally, the door-to-door enumeration exercise had been extended until August 17.
The ECI has mandated that the state government publish the revised schedule in an extraordinary issue of the state gazette and ensure that the new deadlines receive widespread publicity. This move aims to facilitate greater participation in the electoral process and ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to register and voice their opinions in the upcoming elections.
