Maharashtra faces a severe drought, affecting 80% of its talukas.
In a heartbreaking incident, a 55-year-old farmer named Rajendra Sapate reportedly committed suicide on October 8 in Bhandara district, Maharashtra. This tragedy follows his recent plea to a state minister about the dire conditions faced by farmers due to drought. Sapate, a resident of Dhop taluka, was found deceased in a well located in his paddy field, highlighting the devastating consequences of crop failure amid insufficient rainfall.
The situation escalated when Sapate, during a ministerial visit on October 3, shared his struggles with Bhandara guardian minister Pankaj Bhoyar. In a video that has since circulated on social media, he articulated the severe distress that farmers are experiencing, stating, "Farming is in danger due to lack of irrigation. The situation is such that farmers may give up their lives." Despite his efforts to seek irrigation support through petitions, he lamented that no significant action had been taken.
Authorities confirmed that Sapate’s entire paddy crop had been destroyed due to the ongoing drought. Following the discovery of his body, local police reported that his relatives expressed no suspicion regarding the circumstances of his death and opted not to pursue any charges. An accidental death case has been filed, and investigations are currently ongoing.
Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been actively seeking assistance from the central government, having met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the state’s dire situation. Fadnavis revealed that approximately 80% of the talukas in Maharashtra are experiencing severe drought conditions, with 32 districts facing significant water scarcity. This crisis underscores the urgent need for effective measures to support the agricultural community.
As the drought continues to impact the region, the state government is under pressure to provide immediate relief and implement long-term solutions to prevent further tragedies. The plight of farmers like Rajendra Sapate serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Maharashtra, prompting calls for urgent action from both state and central authorities.
