The construction of a dedicated power grid for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is progressing, with 14 traction substations being established to ensure a consistent and reliable electricity supply for the high-speed rail service. This initiative is part of the broader efforts to enhance the operational efficiency of the 508-km corridor, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two major cities.

Strategically located substations are planned to be built at various points along the route. In Gujarat, nine substations will be constructed in cities including Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahemdavad, Ahmedabad, and at the Sabarmati depot. Meanwhile, Maharashtra will see five substations in Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, and the Thane depot, ensuring comprehensive coverage for the power needs of the bullet train.

The first traction substation, located in Bilimora within the Navsari district, is nearing its final stages of construction. Spanning approximately 18,000 square meters, this facility has already seen the installation of essential components such as control panels, changeover switches, large transformers, and circuit breakers. The structural work for all gantry towers and beams has been completed, and system testing is currently underway to ensure operational readiness.

Electricity for the substations in Gujarat will be sourced from the 220 kV Ambetha Grid Substation, managed by the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO). This power will be distributed to the overhead equipment (OHE) wires along the viaduct through a sophisticated 2 × 25 kV traction power system, which is crucial for the train's operation.

To maintain a seamless power supply, the entire network will be automated, with all substations monitored in real-time from a centralized control center. This setup will facilitate immediate identification and rectification of any technical faults or voltage-related issues, thereby ensuring uninterrupted service for the bullet train as it prepares to commence operations in the near future.
