In a recent enforcement operation, twenty car wash centers in Nagpur were discovered utilizing water from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) drinking water supply. The inspections took place on October 26 and 27, revealing a significant breach of regulations aimed at conserving potable water. Despite these findings, the civic administration has yet to impose any fines on the offending establishments.
The inspection covered a total of 174 car wash centers, with the majority relying on alternative water sources. Specifically, 78 centers used borewell water, while 71 depended on wells. Additionally, four centers utilized tanker water, and one reported using an unspecified source. Notably, Satranjipura emerged as the area with the highest violations, where eight out of 17 inspected centers were found to be drawing from the NMC network.
Dharampeth followed closely with five violations among 26 centers, and Nehru Nagar reported four out of 21. In contrast, no misuse of NMC water was detected in Laxmi Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, or Gandhibagh, where inspections were also conducted.
The inspections were carried out by the NMC’s Nuisance Detection Squad in collaboration with Orange City Water (OCW) teams. This initiative was prompted by directives from Mayor Neeta Thakre and Municipal Commissioner Vipin Itankar, aimed at scrutinizing water usage at car wash centers and swimming pools. The findings come at a critical time when water scarcity is a growing concern due to inadequate rainfall and decreasing reservoir levels.
In response to these issues, the NMC has intensified its water conservation efforts, emphasizing that treated drinking water should be prioritized for essential domestic use rather than commercial activities like car washing. Additional measures being implemented include addressing illegal water connections, revitalizing public wells, and promoting the use of treated wastewater for non-potable applications.
