General Medicine and Radio-Diagnosis dominate the preferences among candidates in the first allotment.

In the recent NEET-PG Round 1 allotment, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur has emerged as the third most sought-after institution for MD General Medicine in Maharashtra. The first seat was allocated to a candidate who secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 140. This places GMCH behind only Seth GS Medical College (KEM Hospital) in Mumbai, which opened at AIR 36, and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College (Sion), which opened at AIR 111.

The preference for GMCH appears to be particularly strong for its General Medicine department, as no other departments from GMCH made it to the top three in the major specialties analyzed. The NEET-PG Round 1 allotment covers 50% of the total seats available before the state counseling round, with GMCH offering 37 postgraduate seats in General Medicine.

A faculty member from GMCH noted that postgraduate students are increasingly making informed decisions based on their professional networks and the experiences shared by their seniors. This trend is reflected in the allotment data, which shows a significant national preference for General Medicine and Radio-Diagnosis. Among the first 25 candidates allotted seats, 17 chose General Medicine, while four opted for Radio-Diagnosis, demonstrating the popularity of these specialties.

The data indicates that General Medicine accounted for 54 allotments (56.25%) among the first 100 ranks, while Radio-Diagnosis accounted for 28 allotments (29.17%). Together, these two specialties represented 85.42% of the allotments in this group. This trend continued up to AIR 500, with 233 candidates (49.68%) selecting General Medicine and 163 (34.75%) choosing Radio-Diagnosis, together making up 84.43% of the total allotments.

Looking ahead, the next steps will involve the state counseling round, where the remaining seats will be allocated. The strong interest in General Medicine at GMCH could influence future enrollment patterns and the overall landscape of postgraduate medical education in Maharashtra.
