In a concerning incident on Tuesday evening, a four-year-old boy named Mayank Walke was injured following an attack by a sub-adult tiger in Chandgaon village, located in Brahmapuri taluka. The attack occurred around 6:30 PM as Mayank was accompanying his cousin, Rohit Walke, to their aunt's house. The timely alert raised by Rohit, who shouted to scare off the tiger, is credited with preventing a more serious outcome.
The attack unfolded as Mayank reached the steps of his aunt's residence, where the tiger suddenly pounced on him. Rohit, hearing his cousin's cries, quickly turned around and saw the tiger attacking Mayank. His loud shouts startled the animal, causing it to retreat. Although Mayank sustained injuries, his condition is reported to be stable after being rushed to Christanand Hospital in Brahmapuri for treatment.
Authorities have indicated that the village falls under the North Brahmapuri forest range, which has seen increasing tiger activity. The incident has sparked renewed concerns regarding the safety of residents, especially children, living near forested areas. The local Range Forest Officer, A R Kannamwar, visited the hospital to assess the situation and stated that it is still unclear whether the tiger involved was a sub-adult or a cub.
The presence of tigers in populated areas poses significant risks, prompting local officials to investigate the incident further. Police have also initiated inquiries to understand the circumstances surrounding the attack. This incident has raised alarms among the community about the safety of their children and the need for measures to protect residents from wildlife encounters.
Looking ahead, local authorities are expected to enhance monitoring of tiger movements in the area and may implement safety protocols for residents living near forest boundaries. The community remains on high alert as they seek solutions to prevent future incidents involving wildlife encroachment into human habitats.
