A fatal accident on Godhani–Mankapur Road has reignited public outrage over safety issues in Nagpur.
A 31-year-old woman was killed in a truck collision while riding a scooter with her son.
The incident marks the second fatal crash at the same location in just over a month.
Residents are demanding immediate action to improve road safety and conditions.
A tragic accident on Nagpur's Godhani–Mankapur Road resulted in the death of a 31-year-old woman and left her six-year-old son critically injured. The incident occurred when a gravel-laden truck collided with their scooter, prompting widespread protests and renewed calls for improved safety measures in the area. This crash is particularly alarming as it marks the second fatality at this location within the last 34 days.
The victim, Ashwini Phalke, was riding as a pillion passenger with her son, Advik, while her husband, Pankaj, operated the scooter. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Ashwini attempted to push her son out of harm's way just moments before the truck struck them. She suffered fatal head injuries and died at the scene, while Advik was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition. Pankaj managed to escape with minor injuries after being thrown from the scooter.
The collision also caused damage to nearby shops and street vendors. Following the accident, the truck driver fled the scene, leading to a significant gathering of residents who blocked the road for over four hours in protest. The situation escalated, prompting the visit of Additional Commissioner of Police Vinita Sahu to address the crowd. Subsequently, police arrested the truck driver, Sheikh Jameel, after reviewing CCTV footage that captured the incident.
Local residents expressed their frustration over the frequent occurrence of such accidents, citing high-speed truck traffic, poor street lighting, and ongoing construction that narrows the road as contributing factors. They highlighted the need for better traffic management and enforcement, especially after a similar incident on September 30 resulted in another fatality involving a young student. The community is demanding accountability from local authorities and immediate action to rectify the hazardous conditions on the road.
In response to the protests, senior officials from various civic bodies have been summoned to address the safety concerns. The police announced plans to collaborate with municipal agencies to tackle encroachments, improve road conditions, and enhance street lighting. This tragic incident has raised critical questions about road safety management in Nagpur, especially with two fatalities in such a short span, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in traffic safety and urban planning.
