Nagpur has witnessed a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) registrations, surpassing 1.41 lakh as of September 2026. This surge is attributed to escalating fuel prices and the growing popularity of rooftop solar systems, which are encouraging residents to shift towards electric mobility. The data from the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) indicates that Nagpur East leads with 65,479 registrations, followed by Nagpur Rural with 53,112 and Nagpur City with 23,205.

The trend towards electric two-wheelers is particularly notable, as more motorists are opting for these vehicles over traditional petrol-powered options. Market experts highlight that the price difference between electric and petrol two-wheelers has diminished, making EVs a more appealing choice. Additionally, many commuters have reported a decline in fuel efficiency, further boosting the demand for electric alternatives.

Over the past five financial years, the annual figures for EV registrations have shown a consistent upward trajectory. The district recorded 15,152 registrations in 2022-23, which increased to 23,258 in 2023-24, and further to 25,323 in 2024-25. The latest data for 2025-26 shows a slight rise to 25,370 registrations, with 20,247 EVs registered in the current financial year up to September.

The appeal of electric vehicles extends beyond personal use, with electric passenger vehicles, e-rickshaws, and goods carriers gaining traction among commercial operators looking to reduce operational costs. Experts note that with petrol prices around Rs112 per litre and diesel at Rs99, the lower running costs of EVs make them an attractive option for local commuting. The integration of rooftop solar systems is also enhancing the economic viability of electric mobility for households.

The charging infrastructure in Nagpur has expanded significantly, with 467 charging stations currently in operation. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) is overseeing the establishment of this infrastructure. However, the current ratio of approximately 304 registered EVs per charging station indicates a pressing need to enhance charging capacity to keep pace with the growing number of electric vehicles in the district.
