The Karmaveer Marotrao Kannamwar Govt Medical College's new hospital is set to enhance healthcare in eastern Vidarbha but faces delays in opening.
The new hospital features 500 beds and modern facilities.
Inauguration is delayed due to the model code of conduct.
Around 20 faculty positions remain unfilled, affecting operations.
The Karmaveer Marotrao Kannamwar Government Medical College in Chandrapur is on the verge of a significant healthcare expansion with its new 500-bed hospital, which is fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern healthcare facilities. However, the inauguration of this facility is currently delayed, despite the building being ready and water supply issues resolved.
The new hospital is crucial for improving access to advanced medical care for residents of Chandrapur and surrounding districts, many of whom currently travel to Nagpur for specialized treatments. The delay in opening has prolonged the college's transition from its existing location at the district general hospital and tuberculosis hospital, which has been in use since the college's establishment in 2015.
According to Dean Dr. Milind Kamble, the inauguration cannot proceed while the model code of conduct is in effect, and a date will be set once conditions allow. The construction of the new campus began in 2019, with an initial completion target of 2023; however, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted this timeline. The site has six borewells, ensuring a water supply sufficient for approximately two-and-a-half years.
Established in 2015, the medical college admits 150 MBBS students annually and offers 20 postgraduate courses. Despite its growth, the institution faces challenges due to around 20 vacant faculty positions, which include roles for professors and assistant professors. This shortage impacts academic activities, postgraduate training, and the delivery of healthcare services.
As the new hospital infrastructure stands ready, addressing the faculty vacancies and ensuring adequate staffing will be critical for maximizing the hospital's potential and providing comprehensive healthcare services to the community.
