In a significant development, the Wadi Police in Nagpur have apprehended a suspect linked to a burglary gang, with two other individuals still evading capture. The arrest of Nilesh Bawane follows an attempted break-in at the Bank of India branch located at Eighth Mile, which occurred in the early hours of October 2. Police intensified their investigation after receiving reports of suspicious activities in the vicinity, prompting a thorough analysis of CCTV footage from around 40 locations across the city.
The incident was brought to light by a local shopkeeper who noticed that the bank's entrance gate was ajar. Upon inspection by the bank manager, Nikhil Potdar, it was discovered that the lock on the channel gate had been tampered with. CCTV footage revealed three masked individuals attempting to break the lock, although they did not succeed in completing the theft, leading to a formal complaint lodged at the Wadi Police Station.
Following the attempted burglary, residents from nearby areas, including Indrayani Nagar and Smruti Nagar, expressed their concerns regarding rising thefts and late-night disturbances. This prompted the police to enhance their patrolling efforts and conduct a technical investigation to identify the suspects involved. The collaboration with the Yashodhara Nagar Police team proved crucial in narrowing down the suspects, ultimately leading to Bawane's arrest.
During interrogation, Bawane reportedly confessed to participating in various criminal activities in collaboration with his accomplices, Deharia and Sheikh, who remain at large. Authorities suspect that the gang may be responsible for a series of nighttime offenses, including house burglaries and vehicle thefts, and are working to determine any connections between the attempted bank break-in and other reported crimes in the area.
As the search for the two absconding suspects continues, police have increased surveillance and patrolling in the affected neighborhoods. The capture of Deharia and Sheikh is anticipated to provide further clarity on the gang's operations and confirm the extent of their criminal activities in Nagpur.
