A shawl woven by the talented women of Melghat was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit 2026, held recently. This event, organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, attracted representatives from over 130 countries, including ministers, policymakers, and industry experts.
The shawl was crafted by six women from the Amravati-based Kasturba Solar Khadi Mahila Samiti, namely Sushila Patorkar, Sunita Sirsat, Varsha Tathod, Anita Waghmare, Rutuja Kotangle, and Mona Murle. Their work was guided by Tushar Gothe, the head of the Process and Printing Department at the organization, which focuses on empowering rural and tribal women through skill development.
The initiative, known as the Amravati Decentralized Solar Charkha Cluster, aims to provide sustainable employment opportunities to local women. By utilizing solar energy for spinning and weaving, the project not only promotes traditional craftsmanship but also fosters economic self-reliance among participants. The Kasturba Solar Khadi Mahila Samiti has been instrumental in encouraging these women to engage in various artistic processes related to fabric production.
The shawl's presentation at such a prestigious international platform underscores the significance of this initiative. It serves as a vital step towards integrating traditional Khadi into modern markets while promoting solar energy in textile production. Pradeep Chechare, the District Village Industries Officer of Amravati, emphasized the importance of this project in creating employment opportunities for rural women and gaining global recognition for local products.
Looking ahead, the success of this initiative could pave the way for further growth and development in the region. The positive reception at the summit may lead to increased investment and interest in similar projects that combine traditional craftsmanship with sustainable practices, ultimately benefiting the local economy and empowering more women in the community.
