In a significant effort to reduce air and noise pollution during the Diwali festival, Nagpur authorities have implemented a ban on the sale and use of traditional string firecrackers. The city will only permit the use of environmentally friendly green crackers, as announced by the Nagpur Police. This initiative aims to address growing concerns over pollution levels in the region.
The decision follows directives from the Bombay High Court, which had previously raised alarms regarding the excessive noise generated by high-decibel firecrackers and modified vehicles. In response, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Pakhale presented a compliance affidavit detailing the measures taken by the police to enforce pollution control regulations effectively.
As part of the enforcement strategy, the administration has declared 15 major roads and sensitive areas as 'No-Cracker Zones', where temporary licenses for firecracker sales will not be issued. These zones include Burdi Main Road, Mahal to Gandhi Gate Square, and several others, ensuring that the most affected areas are protected from the adverse effects of firecrackers.
In addition to the crackdown on firecracker sales, police have taken legal action against 10 sellers for breaching licensing conditions under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. To further promote awareness, the police have conducted 363 educational campaigns in schools and colleges, focusing on the environmental impact of firecrackers and the importance of pollution control.
Looking ahead, the Nagpur Police have committed to ongoing enforcement of these regulations throughout the festive season. The aim is to maintain lower levels of noise and air pollution, ensuring a safer and more environmentally friendly Diwali celebration for all residents.
