A recent study published in the Journal of Wood Science suggests that essential oil derived from the roots of Japanese cypress trees, known as Hinoki, may enhance various aspects of sleep. Conducted by researchers at Kyushu University, the study aimed to explore the dual purpose of adding value to underutilized Hinoki roots and assessing the oil's impact on sleep quality.

The research involved 12 Japanese women aged between 35 and 60 years, who participated in a single-blind crossover trial. Each participant used Hinoki root essential oil for two weeks, followed by a control period using an unscented oil. The study was designed to assess the effects of the oil in a natural home environment, contrasting with previous research conducted in controlled laboratory settings.

During the trial, participants inhaled the Hinoki aroma before sleep and kept the oil nearby. Results indicated a notable increase in delta-wave activity, which is associated with deeper sleep, after a week of using the essential oil. By the end of the study, participants reported feeling more refreshed upon waking and experienced fewer interruptions during the night, with smartwatch data supporting these claims.

The findings suggest that repeated exposure to Hinoki root oil may facilitate better sleep initiation and continuity, as well as improved morning recovery. This research highlights the potential of utilizing an often-overlooked forestry resource while addressing sleep quality issues. However, the researchers caution that these results do not imply that Hinoki oil can treat insomnia or other sleep disorders, as the study was limited in scope and duration.

Moving forward, the team emphasizes the need for larger studies with diverse populations to validate these findings and explore the clinical significance of Hinoki root oil in sleep improvement. Such research could pave the way for new applications in sleep therapy and wellness.
