District-level workshops addressing the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination were recently conducted in Kiphire and Mon. These workshops aimed to enhance community awareness and tackle vaccine hesitancy. Organized by the District Task Force on Immunisation (DTFI) in partnership with Jhpiego, the Kiphire workshop took place in the conference hall of the District Hospital. The primary objective was to assess the progress of the HPV vaccination program, identify challenges, and develop strategies for improving program delivery through collaboration among various stakeholders.

During the Kiphire workshop, Jhpiego outlined its objectives, while the district immunisation officer provided insights into vaccination statistics. Discussions emphasized the importance of HPV vaccination as a preventive measure against cervical cancer, alongside strategies for community engagement. Key topics included the development of communication resources, addressing public misconceptions, and methods to alleviate vaccine hesitancy.

A similar workshop was held in Mon on October 9, where health officials, community leaders, and representatives from various organizations gathered to discuss strategies for increasing HPV vaccination rates. Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, highlighted the vital role of community education in public health initiatives, urging local organizations to raise awareness among parents about the importance of vaccinations.

Dr. Supongmenla Walling, Chief Medical Officer for Mon, noted that despite conducting 116 out of 118 planned vaccination sessions, only 54 out of a target of 2,235 adolescent girls had received the vaccine. This statistic underscores the urgent need for intensified outreach and community involvement to improve vaccination rates.

As the workshops concluded, participants engaged in discussions about actionable steps their organizations could take to enhance vaccination uptake. They reaffirmed their commitment to addressing barriers and encouraging parents to ensure their daughters receive the HPV vaccine, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in fostering public confidence in vaccination services.
