On October 12, a significant breast cancer awareness program took place at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura campus, featuring a cancer survivor's personal narrative alongside expert medical advice. Organized by The Big C Cancer Support Network, the event aimed to educate attendees about breast cancer, the importance of early detection, and the necessity of timely medical intervention.
Dr. Silchang K. Marak, an oncologist from Tura Civil Hospital, addressed the audience, emphasizing the critical need for individuals to be vigilant about changes in their bodies. He urged attendees to seek medical advice when they notice unusual symptoms, highlighting that early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Natasha R. Marak, the founder and coordinator of The Big C Cancer Support Network, shared her own journey as a cancer survivor. She underscored the vital role that timely medical care and emotional support play during treatment and recovery. Her story resonated with many, as she encouraged the audience to foster empathy towards cancer patients and their families, who often require support beyond just medical assistance.
The event, supported by Dr. J. U. Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU’s Tura campus, also included a pledge from participants to promote breast cancer awareness and support those affected by the disease. Pink ribbons were distributed as a symbol of solidarity, reinforcing the community's commitment to this cause.
Moreno Gretachi R. Marak concluded the program by expressing gratitude to the university, the speakers, and all participants for their engagement. The overarching message of the event was clear: “Know. Detect. Act.” This initiative not only aimed to raise awareness but also to create a supportive environment for those impacted by breast cancer.
