In a notable financial development, India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged by 23% in October, totaling over ₹2.31 lakh crore. This increase is attributed to strong performance in domestic economic activities and a significant rise in imports, as reported by government data released on Sunday.
The breakdown of the collections shows that revenues from domestic sales rose by 16%, amounting to over ₹1.59 lakh crore, while revenues from imports saw a remarkable increase of 42%, reaching ₹72,246 crore. The total gross collection includes ₹42,935 crore from Central GST, ₹51,340 crore from State GST, and over ₹1.37 lakh crore from Integrated GST.
Furthermore, GST refunds also saw an uptick, increasing by 6.5% year-on-year to ₹27,934 crore in October. After accounting for these refunds, the net GST collections for the month rose by 26%, surpassing ₹2.03 lakh crore. This reflects a robust fiscal environment and effective tax collection mechanisms in place.
Looking at the broader picture, during the April to October period, gross GST collections have grown by 13.2%, totaling over ₹14.77 lakh crore. Net collections during this timeframe also increased by 13%, amounting to over ₹12.69 lakh crore, indicating a steady growth trajectory in the country's tax revenues.
As the government continues to monitor these trends, the implications for fiscal policy and economic planning are significant.
