Microsoft offers a voluntary exit program to employees at level 70 and below in India, the US, UK, and Canada.
Eligible employees will receive one month's salary for each year of service, along with health insurance and career transition services.
The decision to participate must be made by December 1, with a commitment to invest $20.5 billion in India's AI ecosystem.
On Monday, Microsoft announced a voluntary exit program aimed at eligible employees in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. This initiative provides financial support and career planning resources for those who choose to leave the company. The program is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to adapt its workforce and support employees considering new opportunities outside the organization.
The voluntary exit offer is available to employees at level 70 and below, which encompasses various seniority levels within the company. Microsoft has approximately 23,000 employees in India, though the exact number eligible for this program remains unclear. Globally, around 60,000 employees could potentially participate. Employees in India must make their decision by December 1, 2023.
The exit package includes one month's base salary for every completed year of service, along with health insurance and career transition services. Amy Coleman, Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer, emphasized that this program is designed to provide employees with a supportive transition while allowing the company to adjust its workforce based on evolving business needs. Coleman noted that the initiative is time-limited and aims to offer flexibility to those contemplating a future outside the company.
In addition to the voluntary exit program, Microsoft reiterated its commitment to investing in India's technology and talent ecosystem. The company plans to invest $20.5 billion between 2025 and 2029 to support cloud and AI infrastructure, skilling, and operations in India. This investment aligns with Microsoft's goal of equipping 20 million people across the country with AI skills by 2030.
Looking ahead, Microsoft will continue to provide opportunities for employees to develop new skills and explore internal career paths. Coleman stated that the company recognizes the need for a tailored approach to workforce management, ensuring that individual business priorities and workforce requirements are considered. Eligible employees will receive detailed information about their voluntary exit offers via email, marking a new chapter in Microsoft's approach to workforce transitions.
