Disagreements center on the valuation and division of economic interests and management roles within the family.
Mallika Srinivasan and her daughter Lakshmi Venu have expressed their commitment to resolving a family dispute concerning business interests through open dialogue. This statement comes in response to caveats filed by Venu Srinivasan and his son Sudarshan Venu in the Madras High Court, indicating ongoing legal tensions within the family.
The family dispute revolves around differing interpretations of previous agreements regarding the division of economic interests. Mallika and Lakshmi contend that a memorandum of understanding established in March 2024 does not equate to a fair economic settlement. They argue that arrangements related to brand usage and trademarks should not be considered as a division of family wealth, emphasizing the need for transparent discussions to reach a mutual agreement.
In their joint statements, Mallika and Lakshmi have highlighted the distinction between management responsibilities and ownership rights. They assert that simply assigning leadership roles does not resolve the underlying economic interests among family members. Their position is that no agreement has been finalized that adequately addresses the valuation and division of these interests.
Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that the valuations and borrowings from December 2020 are crucial in assessing the fairness of the family settlement. According to these sources, Lakshmi was expected to receive interests in TAFE, the Sundaram-Clayton die-casting business, and a residential property in Chennai, while Sudarshan was to inherit TVS Holdings along with associated debts. Sudarshan has reportedly assisted Venu in repaying these debts, and the family disputes regarding business performance should not lead to a reevaluation of the settlement.
As the situation develops, the focus remains on whether the parties can reach an amicable resolution without further legal entanglements. The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for the future of the family businesses and their management structures.
