On October 13, GIFT Nifty, an early indicator for Indian equity markets, rose by 0.23% to reach 22,425, signaling a potentially positive opening for the Nifty index. This uptick comes as investors are keenly watching global market trends, especially following a tumultuous session on Wall Street.
In the Asian markets, a stark contrast emerged as major indices fell sharply. South Korea's Kospi plummeted by 5%, losing nearly 300 points to settle at 6,085.43, while Japan's Nikkei index, returning from a holiday, dropped over 2% to 67,551.95. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 also faced a decline of 0.38%, closing at 8,749.40, reflecting the broader negative sentiment in the region.
On the commodities front, Brent crude oil prices saw a slight dip, trading at $106.13 per barrel, down 0.50%. Despite this decline, prices remain high due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and persistent concerns over energy supply disruptions linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This situation continues to affect market sentiment and investor strategies.
The Indian stock market closed lower on October 12, with the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, experiencing losses of 0.76% and 0.70%, respectively. The decline was primarily driven by selling pressure in the FMCG and IT sectors, alongside losses in PSU banks and oil and gas stocks. However, gains in the auto, pharma, and real estate sectors provided some support to the overall market.
Looking ahead, investors are bracing for a busy week filled with corporate earnings reports and inflation data, which could influence market movements. Key earnings releases from companies like RBL Bank and HCLTech are anticipated, and market participants are eager for cues that could sustain the recent rally in technology stocks. The upcoming IPO of HD Fire Protect, set to open from October 13 to October 15, is also expected to attract attention as it offers fire protection solutions in a growing market.
