Indian imports of Middle Eastern crude rose to 2.8 million barrels per day in September.

3

Investor sentiment is likely to remain volatile due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The Indian stock market is experiencing a downturn as crude oil prices surge, with both the Sensex and Nifty 50 indices reporting losses at the start of the week. Specifically, the Sensex fell by 0.46% and the Nifty 50 by 0.5%, driven by a significant decline in IT stocks, which dropped by 1.1%. This decline comes as Brent crude is trading at over $114 per barrel, raising concerns among investors about the implications for the economy and inflation.

The recent spike in oil prices is attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have raised fears of supply disruptions. G Chokkalingam, founder of Equinomic Research, noted that unless these geopolitical issues are resolved, the volatility in domestic equities is likely to persist. He warned that higher energy costs could reignite global inflation and hinder economic growth, casting a shadow over stock markets worldwide.

In September, India's imports of crude oil from the Middle East increased significantly, reaching 2.8 million barrels per day. This surge has raised the region's share of total crude imports to 54%, up from 32% in August. Indian refiners have been actively purchasing more spot cargoes, as Gulf producers have managed to increase crude volumes through strategic shipping methods in the region.

Despite the increase in Middle Eastern imports, Russia remains India's largest crude oil supplier, although imports from Russia fell by 14% in September to 1.8 million barrels per day. This reduction has decreased Russia's share of India's total oil imports from 46.6% in August to 33.5% in September. The ongoing war and geopolitical tensions are expected to continue influencing investor sentiment into the next year, as negotiations between the U.S. and Iran remain stalled.

Looking ahead, market analysts suggest that the Indian stock market will remain sensitive to fluctuations in oil prices and geopolitical developments. Investors are advised to closely monitor these factors, as they will play a crucial role in shaping market dynamics in the coming months.
