In September 2026, electric vehicle sales in India experienced a significant boost, with total registrations climbing to 36,108 units. This figure reflects a 17.63% increase compared to the previous month, where 30,696 units were sold in August. Year-on-year, the growth is even more impressive, with sales nearly doubling from 18,559 units in September 2025, indicating a robust upward trend in the electric vehicle market.

Tata Motors maintained its dominance in the electric passenger vehicle segment, selling 14,791 units in September 2026. This achievement represents a remarkable 100.72% increase compared to the 7,369 units sold in the same month last year. Additionally, Tata's sales saw a month-on-month growth of 12.41% from August 2026, where they sold 13,158 units. Following Tata, Mahindra secured the second position with 7,780 units sold, reflecting a 95.82% increase year-on-year.

In the rankings, JSW MG Motor came in third with 5,254 units sold, marking a 9.14% YoY increase. VinFast, despite being a newer player, recorded an astonishing 49,300% YoY growth with 2,964 units sold, while Kia India reported 1,262 units, up 111.04% YoY. Conversely, Maruti Suzuki's electric vehicle sales fell to 1,104 units, a 21.81% decline from August 2026, highlighting the challenges faced by traditional automakers in the EV transition.

BYD and Hyundai also reported positive sales figures, with BYD selling 836 units and Hyundai recording 792 units, marking significant year-on-year growth. BMW India saw a strong month-on-month increase of 83.21%, selling 502 units. Tesla India continued to thrive, with sales reaching 291 units, a staggering 321.74% increase from the previous year.

Looking ahead, the electric vehicle market in India is poised for further growth as manufacturers prepare to launch new models. Hyundai is set to introduce a new sub-4m electric SUV, while BYD plans to launch its luxury Denza brand in the country. As consumer interest in electric vehicles rises, the competitive landscape is expected to evolve, with both established and emerging brands vying for market share.
