The Union Cabinet has approved a significant revision to the Agnipath scheme, allowing 75% of Agniveers who do not secure regular service after their initial four-year term to extend their engagement by an additional two years. This decision, announced during a media briefing at the National Media Centre, aims to provide a pathway for these individuals to potentially join the armed forces as regular soldiers, contingent upon their willingness and fulfillment of selection criteria.

General N. S. Raja Subramani, addressing the media, explained that while 25% of Agniveers will continue to be offered regular positions based on merit, the remaining 75% will now have the opportunity to serve for two more years. This change follows a thorough evaluation of Agniveers' performance, which highlighted their skills, motivation, and operational effectiveness, according to government assessments.

The extended engagement period will come with enhanced remuneration, an improved Seva Nidhi package, and seniority benefits. The Defence Ministry noted that this decision is rooted in feedback from the three services and aims to better align the aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements of the armed forces, ensuring organizational efficiency.

The Agnipath scheme has been credited with achieving several milestones since its implementation, including a broader recruitment reach across various districts, a more standardized and transparent recruitment process, and improved physical fitness and morale among Agniveers. Additionally, it has facilitated the inclusion of women in various branches of the defense forces, enhancing their skills and educational qualifications during service.

Looking ahead, the government plans to continue the Agnipath scheme with the newly introduced two-year engagement period. This initiative not only aims to support Agniveers in their career paths but also addresses the operational needs of the armed forces, ensuring a robust and capable military workforce in the future.
