UK PM suggests Iranian Revolutionary Guard is behind recent airbase threats.
Tehran denies involvement in incidents at RAF Fairford and other bases.
In a significant address, MI5 Director-General Ken McCallum revealed that Iran is intensifying its efforts to target sensitive military installations in the UK. This statement follows a series of alarming incidents at British airbases, including RAF Fairford, which is utilized by US forces. McCallum indicated that there has been a notable shift in Iran's approach this year, with a focus on more challenging military targets.
The backdrop of this warning includes a recent incident on September 27, when British police declared a major incident after three suspicious vans were observed near RAF Fairford. Five men were arrested under the Explosives Act but were later released on bail without charges. The police discovered petrol in the vans but no explosives, raising concerns about potential threats to national security. This incident coincided with heightened scrutiny of Iranian activities in the UK, particularly from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested that the IRGC is likely responsible for a suspected plot against RAF Fairford, prompting the US to withdraw its military aircraft from the base earlier this month due to security concerns. The UK government has since imposed sanctions on two Iranian nationals linked to these activities, including Ruhollah Bazghandi, who oversees IRGC counterespionage operations.
McCallum emphasized that the threats are not isolated to the UK, indicating a broader pattern of Iranian aggression worldwide. He noted that UK authorities have made 50 arrests related to Iran-linked operations over the past year, reflecting a proactive stance against potential threats. However, he expressed skepticism about Iran's capability to execute complex attacks within the UK, citing the lack of sophistication among operatives.
Looking ahead, the UK government is expected to continue monitoring Iranian activities closely, with further investigations into the incidents at RAF Fairford and other military sites. The ongoing situation underscores the need for heightened vigilance regarding national security and the potential implications of Iranian operations in the region.
