Two individuals lost their lives in the collapse of an under-construction building in Chawri Bazaar.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with several people feared trapped under the debris.
This incident follows a series of building collapses in Delhi, raising concerns about construction safety.
A tragic incident unfolded in Delhi's Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning when a three-storey building under construction collapsed, leading to the deaths of two individuals. The incident was reported around 9:50 AM from Gali Sitara, close to the Chawri Bazaar Metro station. Emergency services, including six fire units and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue operations.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the collapse occurred around 9:30 AM, startling nearby residents. Mohd Nayeem, a local witness, described the moment as a loud crashing sound that led them to believe their own home was collapsing. Upon investigation, they discovered the adjacent building was the one affected. Reports suggest that the building had been under construction for three to four months and was unoccupied at the time, with only laborers present inside.
Visuals from the site show debris strewn across a narrow lane, complicating rescue efforts. Rescuers faced challenges navigating the congested area, with parked vehicles obstructing access. Local residents assisted by moving their vehicles to facilitate the arrival of ambulances. The ongoing rescue operations aim to locate any individuals who may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
This incident is part of a troubling trend in Delhi, where multiple building collapses have occurred recently. Just days prior, two men died when two slabs of a building collapsed in northeast Delhi during construction work. Additionally, a four-storey building collapse in Seemapuri earlier this month resulted in three fatalities, including a child. These incidents have prompted criticism of local authorities regarding construction safety standards.
In response to the latest collapse, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for their handling of building safety audits. He questioned the effectiveness of these audits, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent further tragedies. As rescue operations continue, the community remains on high alert for updates regarding the fate of those potentially trapped in the debris.
