In a significant diplomatic development, US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, disclosed that President Donald Trump turned down Iran's recent proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing nuclear conflict. The rejection was primarily due to Iran's insistence on receiving sanctions relief and other concessions upfront, which Waltz described as a non-starter for negotiations.
Waltz elaborated on the situation during an appearance on CNN's 'State of the Union,' stating that Iran was demanding relief from 'billions and billions' of dollars in sanctions before any substantive discussions regarding its nuclear program could commence. This stance led Trump to question the sincerity of Iran's negotiating intentions, as he believed the proposal was fundamentally flawed by its demands for major concessions prior to meaningful dialogue.
On Saturday, Trump publicly confirmed the rejection of the Iranian proposal, which reportedly included terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks in exchange for lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and easing sanctions on Iranian oil exports. Trump remarked that Iran was desperate to make a deal, highlighting their precarious position in the ongoing conflict. He asserted that the US was 'winning tremendously' and maintained 'total control' over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Iran, however, has contested the US narrative. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that while Iran remains open to diplomatic solutions, any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would be contingent upon Tehran fulfilling its own conditions. Speaking on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Araghchi emphasized Iran's readiness to resume military action if necessary, but also reiterated the country's willingness to engage in negotiations.
The ongoing dispute is set against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane, and ongoing military confrontations between the US and Iran. Waltz also dismissed rumors suggesting that Trump had committed to resuming airstrikes against Iran following the midterm elections, asserting that the president had not made any such decisions and would keep all options available moving forward.
