The US Treasury has relaxed sanctions on Russian diesel, coinciding with rising fuel prices.
Former US President Donald Trump has publicly called for Ukraine to consider a new president, attributing the ongoing conflict with Russia to the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Speaking from the White House, Trump expressed that Zelenskyy has failed to negotiate peace, stating, "I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal." This comment came shortly after the US announced a deal to ease restrictions on Russian diesel supplies, a move that has raised concerns amid rising fuel prices in the US.
Trump's remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in Ukraine, where he claimed that the war could have been avoided had he been in office during its onset in 2022. He criticized Zelenskyy for losing significant territory and claimed that over two million lives have been lost in the conflict, emphasizing that the war should never have started. Trump's comments reflect a broader critique of the current administration's handling of the situation in Ukraine.
In response, President Zelenskyy condemned the US decision to relax restrictions on Russian diesel imports, warning that such actions could embolden Russia to intensify its military aggression against Ukraine. In a post on social media platform X, Zelenskyy highlighted the direct consequences of allowing Russia to sell petroleum products, noting that recent missile attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities were a stark reminder of the ongoing threat.
Zelenskyy accused Russia of using the revenue from energy exports to bolster its military capabilities, urging the US and European allies to implement stricter measures against Moscow. He emphasized that every additional dollar earned from energy exports would be funneled into military enhancements, including the production of weapons and recruitment of mercenaries.
The recent diesel agreement, announced by Trump, involves Russia supplying over 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, with further shipments planned in the coming months. The US Treasury's easing of sanctions on Russian diesel shipments until April 7, 2024, is seen as a response to rising fuel prices linked to the ongoing geopolitical tensions. This development comes ahead of the midterm elections in the US, where energy costs are becoming a critical issue.
