A tragic incident unfolded in Nepal's Solukhumbu district on Tuesday morning when two helicopters collided during landing, resulting in the death of an Indian tourist and injuries to three others. The deceased, identified as 47-year-old Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu from Chennai, died at the scene of the accident, according to local officials.
The collision took place around 8:11 AM at Pheriche, a village located at an altitude of 4,200 meters (approximately 13,780 feet). Both helicopters were transporting trekkers who were returning from the Everest base camp, a popular destination during the trekking season in Nepal. The Fishtail Air helicopter, carrying Balaramaramadu, collided with an Air Dynasty chopper, leading to the tragic outcome.
Inspector Mausam Tamang confirmed that the body of the deceased tourist was transported to a hospital in Lukla. Among the injured was Shailesh Krishna Patel, a New Zealand citizen of Indian descent, who was also aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter. He was subsequently airlifted to Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu for medical attention. Reports indicate that the pilots of both helicopters sustained minor injuries in the crash.
The collision has raised concerns regarding the safety protocols in place for helicopter operations in high-altitude regions, especially during peak trekking seasons. The Nepalese authorities are yet to confirm the total number of passengers aboard both helicopters at the time of the incident, which has sparked discussions about air travel safety in the region.
As investigations into the crash continue, local authorities are expected to review safety measures for helicopter flights in the Everest region. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with high-altitude trekking and air travel in mountainous terrains, prompting calls for enhanced safety regulations to prevent future accidents.
