On Monday, the Central government announced the appointment of three new judges to the Supreme Court of India, enhancing the judiciary's strength and diversity. The newly appointed judges are Justice Sunita Agarwal, currently the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice DK Upadhyay, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

This decision follows a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 28, which proposed these appointments to fill vacancies in the apex court. With the approved strength of the Supreme Court set at 38 judges, the current number stands at 37 after these appointments.

Justice Sunita Agarwal has a distinguished career, having served as a judge of the Allahabad High Court before her elevation. She has been the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court since July 2023 and is expected to retire from the Supreme Court in April 2031. Justice DK Upadhyay, who has held various significant roles, including Chief Standing Counsel for Uttar Pradesh, was appointed as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in January 2025 after serving as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh has a robust legal background, having practiced in multiple High Courts and served as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court before his current role.

The appointments of these judges are significant not only for the individuals involved but also for the broader legal landscape in India. Each judge brings a wealth of experience from their respective High Courts, which is expected to enhance the Supreme Court's deliberations and decisions. The judiciary plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice in the country, and the addition of these judges is a step towards maintaining that integrity.

Looking ahead, the Supreme Court will continue to address various pressing legal issues, and the new judges are anticipated to contribute significantly to the court's functioning. Their backgrounds and experiences will likely influence future rulings and the overall direction of the judiciary in India. The legal community and the public will be closely observing their contributions in the coming years.
