In a series of attacks claimed by Houthi forces, three civilians lost their lives and 36 others were injured at two airports in Saudi Arabia. The incidents occurred at Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, according to the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).
The attack on Abha International Airport resulted in the deaths of two women, a Moroccan and an Algerian, while injuring 28 others. Meanwhile, the assault on King Khalid International Airport claimed the life of a Sudanese citizen and left eight individuals injured, including five Saudi nationals. GACA has stated that it is collaborating closely with security authorities to evaluate the damage and implement necessary safety measures for passengers and airport personnel.
Major-General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, reported that forces successfully intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh and destroyed a launch platform in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, used for these attacks. This comes amid ongoing tensions, as Saudi-backed Yemeni forces engage in combat with Houthi forces, who have captured significant territory near the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Following the attacks, new security measures have been introduced, including the installation of cage-like fences around fuel tanks and equipment at Aramco facilities near Riyadh airport. This week, Saudi-led coalition forces also reported intercepting a suspected Houthi missile targeting the Riyadh airport, highlighting the escalating security threats.
In light of the ongoing situation, the U.S. embassy in Riyadh has issued a security alert for American citizens, urging them to maintain heightened vigilance. The recent attacks underscore the precarious security landscape in the region, with implications for both local and international stakeholders as tensions continue to rise.
