Local officials have begun an inquiry to determine how the cards ended up at the site.
In a startling discovery, thousands of voter ID cards were found strewn along the banks of the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district. The cards, primarily associated with voters from the Rau Assembly constituency in Indore, were uncovered at a ghat in Mandleshwar, approximately 65 kilometers from the district headquarters. This incident has sparked a political uproar, with Congress party members calling for a formal police report and a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The situation came to light after a video showcasing the scattered voter ID cards gained traction on social media, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Maheshwar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Purva Mandloi confirmed the recovery of the cards and indicated that a tehsildar was dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the total number of cards remains undetermined, officials are working diligently to gather more information.
On Sunday morning, members of the Niswarth Seva Samiti discovered the cards while cleaning the Narmada Ghat. Following the report, a revenue department team was sent to the location to secure the cards and document the recovery process. Mandlaeshwar police official Shweta Shukla noted that a written complaint had been filed, and the police are now investigating the matter further, aiming to uncover the details of how the cards ended up in such a location.
The discovery has led to protests by Congress workers outside the Mandleshwar police station, where they submitted hundreds of voter ID cards along with a formal request for an FIR. Khargone District Congress president Ravi Nayak expressed concerns over the potential implications of the incident, alleging that it raises questions about electoral integrity. He emphasized the need for an impartial investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
As the inquiry progresses, officials are expected to clarify the ownership of the recovered cards and the timeline of events leading to their disposal. The investigation aims to determine accountability and ensure that any electoral malpractice is addressed appropriately, with further updates anticipated in the coming days.
