13 people killed and 10 injured in a drone strike at Dnipro station.
Ukrainian President Zelensky demands stronger international sanctions against Russia.
The attack underscores Russia's ongoing campaign against Ukraine's transport infrastructure.
On Thursday morning, a Russian drone attack targeted a train platform at the Dnipro railway station in Ukraine, leading to the deaths of at least 13 individuals and injuring 10 others. The incident occurred while a train, scheduled to travel to Zaporizhzhia, was stationed at the platform when the strike took place, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The Ukrainian Railways reported via Telegram that the drone used in the attack was jet-powered. Despite an alert indicating an elevated threat level, civilians were present on the platform at the time of the strike. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, as it directly impacts civilian transport.
In response to the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as "horrific" and called for immediate international action. He highlighted the frequency of such attacks since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the energy sector, questioning the effectiveness of current measures. Zelensky emphasized the need for stronger sanctions from the EU, the United States, and the G7 to counter Russia's aggression.
The mayor of Dnipro, Borys Filatov, referred to the incident as a tragedy, noting that a civilian electric train was struck. This incident is part of a broader pattern, as Russia has increasingly targeted Ukraine's critical transport infrastructure, with over 1,700 rail facilities attacked in 2026 alone, according to the state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense as Ukraine continues to face threats to its infrastructure. The international community's response to Zelensky's call for action will be crucial in determining the future course of the conflict and the safety of civilians in Ukraine.
