Rajendra Arlekar appointed as the full-time Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Other new governors include Braj Mohan Ram for Odisha and Sudha Yadav for Karnataka.
The appointments will take effect once the new governors assume their roles.
In a significant reshuffle, President Droupadi Murmu appointed new governors for six Indian states on Monday. Among the notable changes, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who previously held additional responsibilities in Tamil Nadu, has now been officially designated as the state's full-time governor. This transition comes as part of a broader reorganization of gubernatorial roles across the country.
Arlekar's appointment follows his interim role since March when he took over after R N Ravi was reassigned to West Bengal. During his tenure, Arlekar administered the oath of office to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, marking a period of continuity in governance. His political background includes serving as the Speaker of the Goa Assembly and holding gubernatorial positions in Himachal Pradesh and Bihar.
The reshuffle also sees Om Prakash Mathur, the outgoing governor of Tamil Nadu, moving to Kerala. Mathur, a seasoned BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, has been serving as the Governor of Sikkim since July 2024. His transfer is part of the ongoing adjustments within the gubernatorial framework aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency.
In addition to Arlekar and Mathur, the President appointed Braj Mohan Ram as the new Governor of Odisha, replacing Hari Babu Kambhampati, who took office in January 2025. Sudha Yadav, a former BJP MP, has been appointed as the Governor of Karnataka, making her the state's second woman governor after VS Ramadevi. Dhal Singh Bisen has been designated as the Governor of Uttarakhand, succeeding Lt General (retired) Gurmit Singh, while Dushyant Gautam takes over in Sikkim.
The official communique from Rashtrapati Bhavan did not clarify the future roles for Kambhampati, Gehlot, or Singh, leaving their next assignments uncertain. The new governors are expected to assume their duties shortly, marking a new chapter in the governance of these states.
