On October 13, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, convened a meeting with various opposition leaders and civil society members to discuss strategies against the ongoing electoral roll revisions. Gandhi emphasized that there is no division in the protests, stating, "There are no parallel protests, but only one movement to restore democracy." This gathering took place following a united march by the INDIA bloc to the Supreme Court, seeking to halt the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The meeting highlighted the absence of leaders from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), despite attempts to include them. The CJP had previously called for protests on October 10, which faced a severe police response. Gandhi reassured attendees that political resistance would persist regardless of the Supreme Court's decisions, asserting, "Political resistance will continue, people’s resistance will continue, and it will triumph."
Participants from 16 different parties, including CPI-M, CPI, RJD, and Shiv Sena-UBT, attended the meeting at Gandhi's residence. They discussed the future of the protests, acknowledging that while large-scale actions might pause during the Navratri and Durga Puja festivities, the agitation would remain focused in Delhi. Daily coordination among the INDIA alliance parties was agreed upon to ensure unified actions moving forward.
Gandhi expressed a strong commitment to holding accountable those he believes have compromised India's democratic framework, specifically targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar. He stated, "We assure you that all would be brought to justice," emphasizing that those responsible for alleged electoral theft would not escape consequences.
The opposition leaders also voiced their intention to reclaim the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar, which the government has recently denotified. Gandhi criticized this move, asserting that it undermines democratic expression. Other leaders echoed his sentiments, framing the government's actions as indicative of fear from the ruling party. The opposition remains resolute in their fight to restore democratic rights and practices in the face of governmental challenges.
