Punjab National Bank (PNB) has committed to compensating its customers following allegations of significant financial misconduct at its Greater Noida branch. The bank has already processed three claims totaling Rs 43 lakh and is prioritizing the investigation of other complaints, as reported by the Press Trust of India.

The controversy erupted when numerous account holders reported unauthorized withdrawals from their savings accounts and fixed deposits. In response, PNB stated that it is actively verifying these complaints to assess the magnitude of the discrepancies. The bank is also cooperating with relevant authorities to resolve the issues raised by affected customers.

According to reports, an FIR has been filed against unidentified bank employees under Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to criminal breach of trust. The complaint, initiated by customer Shrichand and others, indicates that the alleged losses could exceed Rs 11.24 crore, with some individuals claiming losses of over Rs 1 crore each. Local estimates suggest the total fraud could be as high as Rs 35 crore, affecting various financial instruments including savings accounts and mutual funds.

In light of these events, PNB has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards fraud and misconduct, promising strict action against those responsible. The bank is enhancing its internal monitoring systems to prevent future occurrences. Gautam Buddh Nagar Lead District Manager Ram Vinod Kumar confirmed that the bank is addressing customer grievances and that several employees, including the branch manager, have been suspended pending further investigation.

As customers grapple with the fallout from this incident, experts advise immediate action if unauthorized transactions are detected. Customers should promptly report suspicious activities to their bank, file formal complaints, and keep records of all communications. If unresolved, they can escalate their complaints to the RBI Ombudsman. The bank's commitment to resolving these issues will be crucial in restoring customer trust and confidence.
